Situation: Christina and I are working on a set-up for the showroom on our basement floor, when all of a sudden…
Me: snif-snif… huh. Is it my imagination, or do I smell something burning?
C: no, I smell it too…
Me: can you hand me a pink panel?
Me: yeah, I’ll add a grey one after this.
C: ok… the scent does get stronger though
Me: it is, right?
Meanwhile… there’s some real smoke development going on…
C: where is it coming from?
Me: *coughing* maybe we should have a look.
As we both enter the storage room, it’s very clear that something’s on fire in the elevator shaft, where the elevator is being replaced.
Me: huh… what could possibly be on fire?
C: I have no idea… do you see fire?
Me: no… just *caugh* a lot of smoke…
C: yells loudly in to the shaft : HELLO?
C: weird huh?
Me: so I think we should put the yellow cubes up here…
Guy who’s working on the elevator enters: there’re some brooms on fire in the elevator shaft…
Me: so there IS a fire!
C: that explains.
Tiena: yelling from upstairs: guys!? Is everything OK down there? It smells like fire in here!
C: Yeah… there’s just a little fire in the elevator shaft.
T: WHAT!? SHOULD WE CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT?
Me: never crossed my mind…
Ten minutes later, as it keeps being smoky and smelling as if the place burnt down…
Boss: Girls, I don’t want to find you two down here suffocated , so you might want to come up till the smoke clears, ok?
Bottomline: we were not at all alarmed by severe smoke and instead of going OUT to get some help, we stayed CLOSE TO THE FIRE and yelled ‘hello’ in to a burning elevator shaft. If you’re stuck with us in a fire, you might want to run. And take us with you. Pretty please.
PS: My throat still hurts a little.
PPS: it wasn’t so much a fire as it were just ‘two brooms that got on fire, put out with a spoon of water’, but the smell did stuck for the rest of the day.
PPPS: tonight is going to be that night on the couch…
… but that doesn’t mean I can’t get myself in some sort of trouble.
